Demonstrations Planned Across Ecuador to Protest Correa’s Policies
The Wall Street Journal 16/03/2015
Organizers say idea grew out of a number of issues including labor concerns and rights to protest.
Organizations representing indigenous people, workers unions and nongovernment organizations announced plans Friday for national demonstrations next week to protest President Rafael Correa’s policies.
Analysts say the protests, planned for Thursday in Quito and several other cities in Ecuador, would be a measure of discontent against Mr. Correa, who has enjoyed strong approval ratings since coming to office in 2007, but is now facing growing economic challenges due to the collapse in oil prices.
Protest organizers say the demonstrations grow out of a number of issues, including union concerns that the government is trying to divide union workers and worries that the administration is trying to criminalize protests.
